With the West Nile Virus spreading rapidly east of the Rookies, please dump all containers of standing water, so mosquitos will not have many breeding areas.

I enjoy gardening.  My family has always been a gardening family.  Our gardens were usually about 1/3 acre in size.  After I got out on my own and got married, I did not have a large section of my backyard where I can plant a garden.  So I began to experiment with gardening in long narrow plots.  My Aunt Margaret inspired me to begin small plot gardening.  She often planted pole beans, lettuce, radishes, sweet bell peppers, and tomatoes in wash tubs in her backyard.  It was never enough to can or freeze, but she would have several pots of fresh beans each summer and plenty of tomatoes.

The last couple years we have had two plots.  Both plots faced the south.   Our first strip was between the house and sidewalk, giving a plot 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep.   Our second plot is along the fence on the north side of the yard.   It started with a spot 10 feet wide and 2 feet deep.  The next year it grew to 21 feet wide.  I may expand it another 10-15 feet over the next couple years.

I created this site for several reasons.  First, to share my experiences and tips that I learn, by journaling my experiences.  Second, I set up a calendar of when to do certain things in the garden.  Third, I set up a mailing list so others can share tips they have learned.  To subscribe, send a message to smallgardens-subscribe@onelist.com with the word subscribe in the subject and message body.
